Join The Workforce

IMPART Alliance trains current and future direct care workers (DCWs) with the skills and knowledge to succeed in the field. Join this statewide movement for professional growth and advancement in direct care.

A Growing Field with Real Impact

DCWs are vital members of the healthcare team, supporting the wellbeing and independence of those they serve. The field is growing rapidly, offering meaningful career opportunities that do not require a four-year degree. Training helps interested workers enter the field in a timely, supported way.

Competency-Based Core Training

Our 50-hour, trainer-led program combines live virtual learning with hands-on lab practice, aligned with Michigan’s 15 Direct Care Worker Competencies. Students learn essential knowledge and gain the confidence to apply what they learn in real-world settings.

Flexible, Stackable, and Accessible

Earn up to four level certificates as you move through the program at your own pace. Skills labs are offered across Michigan, with mobile training options that bring learning opportunities to where DCWs live and work.

Right now, all of our training is covered under our generous grant funding administered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. In the future, we intend to use a fee-for-service model for students to enroll in our training courses.

No, IMPART Alliance does not provide job matching services.

IMPART Alliance training is designed to help you deliver better care while opening doors to better jobs. Whether you’re new or have years of experience, our courses provide practical skills, opportunities to collaborate with and learn from other direct care workers, and a supportive network across Michigan. Each certificate you earn demonstrates your commitment to learning and growth, serving as evidence of your expertise when connecting employers or exploring new career opportunities. By investing in your skills and professional development, you strengthen your confidence, your workplace, and the care you provide.

The 15 competencies outline the core knowledge, skills, and behaviors essential for professional Direct Care Workers (DCWs) to provide safe, high-quality, and person-centered care. Developed by the IMPART Alliance Professional Direct Care Workers Association and adopted with input from the MDHHS/AASA DCW Advisory Committee, they cover areas such as:

  • Understanding the role of a DCW and maintaining professionalism and ethics.
  • Practicing person-centered care and effective communication.
  • Promoting health, wellness, and safety for individuals served.
  • Supporting independence, daily living skills, and community inclusion.
  • Advocating for individuals and respecting cultural preferences.
  • Continuing education, documentation, and organizational participation.
  • These competencies serve as the foundation for training, professional development, and career growth in the direct care workforce.

You can view the full list of all competencies here: 15 Competencies.

No, the IMPART Alliance training does not replace a CNA program. However, if you are already a CNA, you can still benefit from our training. DCWs with any previous credentials, or experience are welcome to enroll. Our courses are designed with stackable certificates, allowing you to select the best match for your interests or skill gaps. For example, CNAs who haven’t received training in instrumental activities of daily living may find Level 3 courses especially useful.

Not yet, but work is now underway! IMPART Alliance and its statewide partners are working to create credentials that recognize DCWs’ skills and professionalism, using the 15 adopted competencies as the foundation for a respected, sustainable career path.
